Proof that engagement sessions by the ocean never go out of style

There are very few things that beat a Vancouver Island sunset by the ocean. The salty air, the sound of the waves, and the everchanging light make everything feel cinematic. It's the kind of place where you forget the camera is even there, and that's when the best photos happen.

For this engagement session, Brenna and Dareion wandered along the shoreline as the evening light settled over the water. No rush, no stiff posing—just walking barefoot through the surf, sharing laughs together, and soaking in this season of life.

The couple celebrated their engagement by bringing a bottle of champagne. Corks popping, champagne spraying everywhere—I love this so much because these are the kinds of moments that make an engagement session feel less like a photoshoot and more like a fun date night.

One of my favourite moments came as they stopped at the water's edge. The tide rolled in around their feet while the sky turned shades of blush and lavender. The smile they shared said more than words ever could. I always hope to capture moments like this—it’s the ones that feel the most genuine and effortless.

And I think that's what engagement sessions are really about. Yes, you’ll leave with the kind of photographs that feel like little time capsules, but you also get a good excuse to slow down for a bit and just spend time together.

The beach is one of my favourite places for that. There's nowhere to be, nothing to distract you, and no pressure to perform. Just the ocean, the sunset, and a chance to be yourselves. Whether you're splashing through the waves, walking hand in hand, or simply taking in the view, the experience always feels relaxed and natural, allowing for authentic moments to unfold.

As a Vancouver Island photographer, I'm always drawn to locations that let nature become part of the story. And that’s the magical thing about the evening coastline—it will never look the same twice. Every sunset paints the sky a little differently and brings its own colours, textures, and vibe. It's just one of the many reasons I love photographing engagement sessions by the ocean and why they never go out of style.

Some rings have a meaning that go far beyond their sparkle, and this one might carry one of the most profound stories I’ve ever heard. As a welder, Dareion used his own two hands and craftsmanship to create Brenna’s engagement ring, completely from scratch. Every detail was thoughtfully shaped, built, and brought to life by the very person who knows her best. It wasn’t just a ring he bought; it’s like he forged a piece of his own heart—a unique and deeply personal symbol of the love they’re building together.

As the horizon caught the final glow of the setting sun and the landscape morphed into beautiful pastel blues and purples, we laid some beach towels onto the sand, soaking in what little light was left before nightfall.

And because apparently popping champagne wasn’t enough of a celebration, Brenna and Dareion ended the evening the only way that felt right to them—with a little friendly competition and a couple of beers. With plenty of laughs and zero hesitation, they punctured the cans and capped off their engagement session with a good old-fashioned shotgun. It was a perfectly chaotic and unique way to finish the night. <3
